Auger-Aliassime’s crazy comeback in Basel: ‘I finally feel like myself again’

Felix Auger-Aliassime made his debut at the Swiss Indoors as a 17-year-old, trained with Roger Federer at the Paradies Tennis Center in Allschwil – and tried his hardest not to hit a ball because he was so nervous. He is now 23 and already a two-time Basel champion. As soon as Federer left, the charismatic Canadian took over the tournament!

On Sunday afternoon he managed to defend his title in the final against the Pole Hubert Hurkacz (26) with a victory of 7:6, 7:6. It is a relief for the 1.93 meter model athlete, who looks back on a – I can only say it – miserable year. Nine starting errors since April were a clear alarm signal for a very talented tennis player like Auger-Aliassime, who was number six in the world last year.

But in the St. Jakobshalle his body seemed to remember the real quality of the shots, all the automatisms. Auger-Aliassime marched through. Convincing, sometimes very inspiring and spectacular. “This is perhaps the most special title of my career,” he says, “it was a wonderful week, I finally feel like myself again, this is the best version of me.”

“I will be the first to register tomorrow”

Curious: the number 19 in the world. had not registered for Basel in time, but managed to get a starting ticket thanks to a wildcard. He jokes: “That was a mistake. I have no excuse for that. But tomorrow I will register for next year.”

That is of course not possible yet. But it is good news for the fans: they can already look forward to the Swiss Indoors successor to record winner Federer.
