No more coup in Basel: Stricker fails in the quarter-final against Humbert

class=”sc-29f61514-0 icZBHN”>

End of the quarter-finals: Dominic Stricker loses to Ugo Humbert in three sets.

After three sets in the quarter-finals, the Basel fairytale is over for Dominic Stricker (21, ATP 96). The Bernese loses to Ugo Humbert (25, ATP 28) 4:6, 6:2, 2:6.

This means that, just like last year, the semi-finals of the 500cc tournament in Basel will take place without Swiss participation. Humbert will face No. 4 seed Hubert Hurkacz of Poland on Saturday.

The Frenchman was the expected unpleasant opponent in a duel between two left-handers. Stricker was able to make up for a nervous start – Humbert was ahead 2-0 and 40-15 on his own serve – but was then unable to break through to 4-6. Surprisingly, the Swiss turned up the heat in the second set and at times clearly dominated his opponent, who was three years older than him.

Stricker can be satisfied

However, Humbert, who had recently shown his good form with victories over top ten players Stefanos Tsitsipas (25, ATP 7) and Andrej Rublew (26, ATP 5) and quarter-finals at the major tournaments in Beijing and Shanghai, found himself back on track again. the right track. He took Stricker’s first service game in the deciding set and this time also thwarted the Bernese’s chance for an immediate re-break. After almost two hours and a second break to make the score 6:2, the Frenchman had the upper hand in the first match between the two.

However, Stricker does not have much to blame himself for after losing his third ATP quarter-final – the first in more than two years. He advanced one lap compared to last year and secured his place in the top 100 of the world rankings at the end of this year. This means that he will participate in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time without qualifying at the Australian Open. (SDA/mom)
