SCB coach Jussi Tapola has created a fourth line that brings energy to the game: Fabian Ritzmann (l.), Noah Fuss and Thierry Schild (r.).

The wings of the fourth SCB storm were rewarded on Thursday. The contracts of Noah Fuss (22) and Thierry Schild (18) have been extended until 2026. And sports director Andrew Ebbett would like to keep the third man in the attacking line, Fabian Ritzmann (21), after this season. “Discussions about a contract extension are still ongoing. We are working on it,” says the Canadian.

The trio surprises this season. Coach Jussi Tapola has his fourth line to his liking and sends them onto the ice for about ten minutes per game. And it provides the SCB with a lot of energy. Fuss, Ritzmann and Schild courageously carry out what the Finnish coach asks of them. While other rows eventually take their foot off the accelerator, the three boys continue to build up steam. “It’s going to get better. “They’ve learned to hold the puck,” Ebbett said.

None of the three could be expected to play such a good role. Ritzmann came over from the HCD last summer, where they no longer relied on him. “We knew he had potential, but not how well he could implement it. He has a great attitude,” Ebbett said of the 6-foot-1, strong-running power forward who played in every game last season.

Shield and base were not planned as permanent starters

When Tapola arrived in the summer, he asked, “Why don’t we try him as a center?” And the Engadine, who had never played in this demanding position before, quickly found his feet.

Foot is 21 centimeters smaller. The Seelander started at the hockey school in Lyss, then played in the U9 and U11 at EHC Biel before progressing through the junior levels at SCB. “He’s small, but no one works harder than him,” Ebbett said. Fuss was intended to be used mainly in the Swiss League in Basel. But the small, tireless wing quickly secured the favor of Tapola, who places great value on running. So far there have been four appearances (with six scorer points) in the partner team.

Schild, who took his first steps at HC Münchenbuchsee-Moosseedorf and completed the sports business school at Feusi with a period at SBB, is also a homegrown player and was not planned as a permanent starter. “We told him he could train with the first team – without the promise that he would play. But he worked hard last summer and earned a spot. It’s great,” says Ebbett.

5 SCB players in the national U20 team

Ritzmann, who played for the U20 of CdH Engiadina as a 13-year-old and later did a commercial internship at HCD, scored his first three NL goals last season and is still waiting for his first goal this season. The former junior international showed his mettle in the opening match against Lausanne when he got into a fistfight with ex-NHL and national striker Cody Almond.

Schild scored his first NL goal in Lausanne last week and Fuss, who wears number 13 in honor of role model Pawel Datsjuk, scored his third NL goal in the derby against the SCL Tigers. “It’s nice that the line has been rewarded with goals lately,” says Ebbett happily. “All three are doing very well. They listen to the coaches. And we were a bright spot in the games where we didn’t play so well.”

Ebbett hopes more young people at SCB will follow the same path. “We want to build a culture of competition.” Louis Füllmann and Nick Meile (both 19) also played this season and are showing great progress. And the next national U20 team will consist of five SCB juniors: the two defenders, Schild and the forwards Gregory Weber (19), who is gaining experience in the Swiss league with Olten, and Alain Graf (18). Great prospects for the Bernese.
