Of all people, Manuel Akanji (28) shocked the Wankdorf shortly after the break. First he hits the crossbar and a few seconds later he scores, giving City the lead. This marks a first for him: he is the very first Swiss player to score a goal in the Champions League against a team from Switzerland.
When Akanji sent the ball into the net, the Bern stadium fell silent. Not so in the guest sector. There they celebrate Akanji’s goal, as they should. It is only the second time that they have had the pleasure of celebrating a goal from the star of our national team. So far he has only scored in the Champions League wearing a Citizens shirt. The first time against Real Madrid in last year’s semi-final. Now he has done it again this year in the group stage.
In Manchester, however, they have long loved Akanji for other reasons. He has become irreplaceable in defense. He is also in the starting line-up against YB – one of only three to start against Brighton in the Premier League last weekend. And Akanji delivers as usual. He radiates a special calmness on the ball. But it is not just the rare release that shows how much he is valued by coach Pep Guardiola (52). On Tuesday, the Spaniard described his protégé at the press conference as “very well educated, cosmopolitan, intelligent”.
The City fans who arrived cheered in the same tone as the coach. Before the match they visit an Irish pub in the middle of Bern’s old town. There they get into the mood for the Champions League evening. Just the way you do it. With songs and beer.
When fans are asked about Akanji, one eulogy follows another. He’s brilliant. He is bursting with game intelligence, always knows what to do with the ball and is a nice guy. One fan even says that Switzerland could send more strong players and nice guys like Akanji to Manchester. They would be happy.
