Motocross rider Jeffrey Herlings has had many duels with Antonio “Tony” Cairoli for years, but the 37-year-old Italian will be his boss from next season. The nine-time world champion will work as team manager for the KTM team of the nine-year-old Brabantian, who has five world titles under his belt, including two in the premier class of MXGP.
When he joined KTM in 2010, Cairoli had already won three world titles (2x MX2 and 1x MX1) with Yamaha as a rider. With this team he won another six championships, all in the toughest racing class. His last title came from 2017, he drove his last world championship race in 2021. Last year the Italian competed in the American AMA Motocross Championship.
At KTM, Cairoli will play an important role in the changed structure of the MXGP team. He will work closely with Belgian Joël Smets, also a five-time world champion, who trains and coaches the KTM riders.
Herlings is also awaiting a restart in 2023 after breaking out completely last season with a foot injury sustained in a fall in training in February.
