Even dismissal is a problem: discussion has broken out about Neuer’s return to the DFB

On Saturday, Manuel Neuer returns to the goal posts at FC Bayern Munich after a ten-month absence. He remains number 1.

The Bayern fans have been longing for this moment. Saturday is the day. Manuel Neuer (37) returns between the posts after a ten-month injury break in the Bundesliga home match against Darmstadt 98. His position in Munich remains undisputed. Despite his age and higher injury risk, Neuer is still number 1.

The goalkeeper question for the German national team could be discussed further. In Neuer’s absence, Marc-André ter Stegen (31) attracted attention with a strong performance.

Returning divides opinions

Many now see him ahead of Neuer for the European Home Championships next year. German goalkeeping legend Toni Schumacher (69) even advises Neuer to end his DFB career permanently. So it takes a lot to be part of the DFB selection again. “I don’t know if he is doing himself a favor by doing this,” Schumacher told Bild.

Bayern icon Sepp Maier (79) thinks differently. He believes Neuer will return. “If he wants to do it, he can do it again,” Maier said. He further adds: Neuer will rise like the “phoenix from the ashes, all discussions about him will be silent again” and no one will notice his months of absence and the 37 years.

It is still unclear what the new DFB coach Julian Nagelsmann (36) plans to do. But the performance principle applies to him anyway. This means that the race for goal position is more open than has been the case in the DFB for a long time. (Gentlemen)
