For Inka Grings, the affair with Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic has been postponed.

Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic (33) has had turbulent weeks. After her return from the World Cup in Barcelona, the Champions League winner announced that despite her contract, plans were being made without her until 2024. Thanks to the help of Lia Wälti and her consultancy firm, the record national team player finds shelter at Atletico Madrid.

Then comes the next hammer as the record scorer will not be called up for the Nati meeting in September. Crnogorcevic does not let this go, trainer Inka Grings (44) publicly criticizes, which does not suit the German.

More about the national team
Inka Grings speaks clearly
“There is no room for too many extra sausages in football”

Now the hatchet is buried – at least from Grings’ perspective. Together with SFV director Marion Daube (47), she flies to Madrid and exchanges ideas with the striker. It was an open and important conversation between adults, Grings said. “I discuss things clearly, but now the whole thing is over for me.” She’s not the resentful type. “It’s about the matter, not about me or Ana, but about the national team.”

No comment from Crnogorcevic

The day after moving to the Nati camp, Crnogorcevic would not comment on the meeting or the content of the conversation with Grings. And when asked whether everything has now been arranged, the 151-time international says: no comment. She has now settled in the Spanish capital and has become accustomed to the different daily rhythm. In six matches she made four appearances and scored one goal.

The record national team player is happy to be back in the national team circle. However, she does not have much time to catch up and exchange ideas with her colleagues after arrival. After the medical examination, she will participate for a longer period of time in the coaching training project initiated by the SFV with six players from the national team. The goal is to obtain the C diploma.

Development is stagnating

About the current situation – there was only one win out of twelve games under Grings – Crnogorcevic says: “I am not satisfied, I have higher expectations of myself and the team.” The national team has developed into a bogeyman in recent years and has made good progress. “Now we stand still.” She also complained about the lack of fire in an interview with the NZZ am Sonntag.

The fact is, however, that the national team has never defeated a major country in an important match. Neither in any of the four tournament participations since 2015, nor in a play-off match. Crnogorcevic describes the 2022 European Championship in England as the best phase, when Switzerland was on par with Sweden (1:2) and the Netherlands (1:4) for a long time, but ultimately came up empty-handed.

The next chance to trip up a top team is Friday in Gothenburg. Not an easy task, because Olympic finalist and World Cup third Sweden is number 1 in the world. “I go into a game wanting to win it – even though it won’t be easy,” Crnogorcevic said. She wants to help fuel the fire with a view to the European Championships. And on the field.
