FC Basel presents a worrying picture in the fall of 2023. But it is not just the first team that is in the sports crisis. The U21s are also fighting for survival in the Promotion League, the third highest Swiss competition.
The record of seven defeats in twelve games is devastating. And it gets worse: the team of coach Dennis Hediger (37) is now threatened with points deductions due to a violation of the regulations.
It happened during the international break: the FCB U21s had to play against promoted team SR Delémont. Due to relegation concerns, the Basel team is sending numerous first-team players to the Jura as reinforcements. Including Kevin Rüegg (25). The measure had an immediate effect: the reinforced U21s defeated the Jurassians, who had eliminated FC St. Gallen in the cup a few weeks earlier, 4-0. These are big points in the relegation battle.
But now the shock: this victory will probably be converted into a 0-3 defeat according to the regulations. Because, as the ‘Basler Zeitung’ has investigated, Rüegg’s deployment is against the rules. There it states under Article 173: “A maximum of three field players older than U-21 may be used at the same time, provided that they have not played all or part of their club’s last previous association match. Translated, this means: A player who was on the field for the first team in the last match is not allowed to play for the U21. The problem: Rüegg was on the field for FC Basel in Wankdorf against YB on October 8. The full-back was substituted three minutes before time.
Rüegg should therefore not have played against Delémont. His three minutes of action in Bern now cost the Basel U21 the all-important three points achieved in the Jura.
Due to this points deduction – which has yet to be confirmed by the league – FCB falls to the penultimate place in the Promotion League. And thus to a direct relegation zone.
