The OR has a secret plan: will the Zermatt descent only take place in Italy?

Olympic downhill champion Didier Defago is the architect of the Matterhorn descent. After the Valais building committee found a violation on the World Cup route, it is suspected that the 46-year-old made a planning error.

Didier Défago (46) immortalized himself as a racing driver with his extraordinary choice of lines. In 2009, the Lower Valais native won the two downhill classics on the Lauberhorn and in Kitzbühel within a week, and in 2010 he triumphed at the Olympic downhill in Vancouver. In addition to his work as CEO for the 2027 World Cup in Crans Montana USA, the trained structural draftsman now also works as a slope builder for the FIS.

The planning of the two-country descent in Zermatt-Cervinia would become his masterpiece. Based on expertise from the Valais Building Committee (KBK), it is now suspected that Défago made a regulatory error in this activity. The KBK writes in a press release that some of the installations for the World Cup races in Zermatt are located in a very small area outside the approved ski zone.

There is a lot of fuss about the Matterhorn descent

Downhill legend and Blick columnist Bernhard Russi (75, world champion in 1970, Olympic champion in 1972) designed race tracks for the international ski association decades before Défago. Russi already explained last Sunday how such inconsistencies can arise. “If you draw a line at a certain scale in a zone plan, it can become very difficult if, for example, you switch from the scale of 1 in 25,000 to the scale of 1 in 1,000. A line that was actually in the right place at 1 in 25,000 can suddenly be shifted slightly on a larger scale or on the spot.

Questionable behavior by the building committee

Precisely for this reason it is difficult to understand why no representative of the construction committee took measurements directly on the World Cup site. The weather has been too bad for the flight to the Theodul Glacier in recent days, the written statement said. However, a Blick video shows that the sky above the Zermatt Glacier was bright blue last Sunday.

But whatever: according to Blick information, the premiere of the World Cup in Zermatt on November 11 is not in danger despite the recent disagreement. Insiders assure that the route can be easily adjusted if a minimal planning error occurs during the remeasurements.

And in case the Valais building committee should make further reservations, the OR has an emergency plan in the drawer. The start of the descent could be moved from the Swiss part to Italian soil. The Italian authorities have long since given their approval.
