When President David Degen and Heiko Vogel announced the resignation of Timo Schultz at the end of September, some remarkable sentences were pronounced. This one from Degen, for example: “Ultimately we had the feeling that Timo did not hold the key to success. At the same time, we are convinced that Heiko Vogel has it in her hands.”

Nearly a month later, two questions arise: Was Degen wrong? Or did Vogel misplace the key?

The facts reveal mercilessly: In the three games since Vogel moved from the team manager’s office to the trainer’s bench, things have gone from bad to worse for the red-blue team.

Under Heiko Vogel from the rain to the fire

Basel has been waiting in vain for a points increase since the coaching change. Gates? FCB scored none under Vogel. And the gap to 6th place, which after 33 rounds gives you the right to participate in the Champions Group and thus compete for the European Cup places that are so important for FCB, has increased.

The phase since August 31 serves as a benchmark: the international transfer window closed on that day and the current FCB squad has been together since then. Under Schultz there was a 2:2 against FCZ, a 2:3 in Yverdon and a 1:1 against Luzern. Then there was a coaching crash, Vogel returned to the sidelines and lost to Lausanne-Ouchy (0:3), YB (0:3) and Servette (0:1).

Under Schultz, FCB scored at least one goal in every match, just like in July and August. When the North German had to leave, the gap to 6th place was seven points (four after losing points). Under Vogel, the FCB offensive is as toothless as a newborn baby. And the mortgage to the savings bank grew to ten points (eight after losing points).

While Vogel glosses over the recent, shockingly weak performance in the 0-1 win against Servette, the players are blunt about the shortcomings, such as defense chief Adrian Barisic: “We have to admit that we are playing poorly.”

According to statistics, FC Basel remains at the bottom

Pointless, goalless, harmless: since the change of coach, FCB has fallen to the bottom of the table, something they have never achieved in the Super League after more than a quarter of the season. Particularly alarming: in the past 20 years, only two teams that carried the red lantern after eleven match days managed to climb to 6th place or higher (Lucerne 2015, Thun 2017). And that with only ten teams in the competition and not twelve from this year.

What Degen also said after Schultz’s dismissal: “It would be fatal not to rely on Heiko Vogel.” Does the president still feel that way?
