The victory against Lugano gave the classification fans a lot of joy – also because it was the second in a row – after the poor start to the season. After the match, another topic was hotly debated on the fan forum. A Palestinian flag is briefly visible in the WG curve below during the minute’s silence for the victims of the war in the Middle East.

An absolute no-go for the majority of GC fans. “This is not part of the sport and ultimately divides us as GC fans,” one user wrote. For another, the gesture could be interpreted as a clear provocation. “If you consider at which corner of our curve this flag was raised, it cannot be interpreted ‘just’ as pro-Palestinian, but also as decidedly anti-Semitic.” Words reminiscent of an unpleasant chapter from GC’s recent past. After all, it was a neo-Nazi who ensured that the match in Lucerne was stopped in 2019, thus sealing relegation.

The club is silent – the league has not announced any sanctions

For some other WG fans, the Palestinian flag displayed has nothing to do with hatred of Jews. Showing this means absolutely nothing. “Pro Palestine does not mean anti-Jews!” the statement read. However, several users agree and agree with the post, which reads: “The flag in our industry is a mess. It doesn’t matter what flag would be there.”

The club remained silent on the issue the day after matchday. The record champion’s media agency left a Blick request unanswered. The league, in turn, recalls a letter it sent to the clubs. “We have sensitized the clubs not to tolerate extremist flags.” Because the Palestinian flag shown does not belong to this circle, there are no sanctions for clubs and fans.
