Yann Sommer (34) has arrived in Serie A. Thanks to the goalkeeper of the Swiss national team, Inter Milan is in the lead. After nine rounds, the Nerazzurri are the leader with 22 points. And summer is on the hunt for records.
In the first nine league games, Sommer kept six clean sheets. Most recently he kept his box clean in the 3-0 win against Torino on Saturday. In Serie A he only had to fall behind five times. And it also contributed to Inter winning five away games in a row to nil in all seasons for the first time since 1972.
Such a strong debut for a goalkeeper in a competition is rare. This is also evident from the statistics of the Serie A. Alisson Becker (31) kept seven clean sheets in his first eleven games for AS Roma in 2017. Cristiano Lupatelli (45) also achieved the same for the Romans. He also kept seven clean sheets in 11 games during the season in 2000 – like Sommer, he kept six clean sheets after just nine games. And yet he was only a substitute goalkeeper.
Either way, there are still two games left in the summer to catch up – or surpass them. No wonder he is now being celebrated from all sides for his achievement. Not only the fans are enthusiastic, the Italian newspaper ‘Gazzetta dello Sport’ is also full of praise. «The Swiss is a solid, attentive and experienced goalkeeper. He also benefits from a team that proves to be collectively consistent and thoughtful,” she writes.
For Sommer it is also one of the best starts to the season of his career. As Basel’s goalkeeper in 2011, he kept six clean sheets in the first thirteen games, but only three in the first nine games. He also had his best league season at FCB when he kept 16 clean sheets in 2012/2013.
But the opposite has also happened. There were only six clean sheets in the Bundesliga in the 2017/18 and 2020/21 seasons. The record was even worse last season, when Sommer managed just five clean sheets after the final whistle. (beer)
