Conclusion after the rainy Big Air Chur: “We come away with a black eye”

The festival site looked desolate on Friday afternoon.

It was a gloomy picture that presented itself on Friday afternoon in Chur GR on the grounds of the Big Air Festival. Wind-torn advertising banners lay in the mud, the entry helpers had their hoods pulled low over their faces and were waiting for work. Because the audience stayed away from the Big Air for a long time on Friday. This was not only due to the terrible weather, but also due to the fact that the freeski finals could not take place under these conditions. It also rained almost continuously on Saturday, at least without showers.

Gremaud in party mood despite final cancellation

“It was the combination of high temperatures, rain and wind that thwarted our plans on Friday,” explains event CEO René Götz. “The snow just melted away from us. With foehn and 18 degrees, even the most experienced ski jumpers couldn’t fix anything.”

It was also bitter for the athletes. Mathilde Gremaud (23), who ultimately inherited the World Cup victory thanks to her top placement in qualifying, was only half-heartedly happy with the trophy with the plastic ibex horns. “Anyway, we’re all going to the Scooter Concert together and really celebrating. Otherwise I certainly wouldn’t have done that,” the Freiburg resident said with a laugh after the award ceremony on Friday evening.

Many residents of Chur saw it very similarly to Gremaud. “On Friday, more than 12,000 people were present in time for the main act. On Saturday there were even 15,000,” Götz confirms. And adds: “If we had held the event in Zurich, for example, there probably wouldn’t have been so many people showing up.” In Graubünden, however, après-ski experienced partygoers are used to donning a warm layer of clothing and dancing to brave the elements.

It is thanks to the rain-proof partygoers that Big Air Chur was able to get away with “a black eye” this year, according to organizer René Götz the day after. At best you get a smooth zero. Whether this forecast is not a bit optimistic will become clear in a few days, when all arrangements have been made. Last year, despite comparable ticket sales, there was a loss of half a million francs – but perfect weather.
