After the miracle of everyday life: Alfa-Sauber: Gambling and good luck

There was great joy after winning the lottery in the Qatari desert – and even greater were Hinwil’s predictions: “Now we will score points in every race until the final!” There was a good shout, but the shout was not heard.

Replacing rubber too quickly

So the daily life is back, although it still looked good after starting 12th (Zhou) and 13th (Bottas). But then it was decided in the pits to bring both drivers in relatively quickly for the two tire stops. In the 10th and 11th rounds and in rounds 28 and 29. It was only half time in Texas. And a third pit stop hadn’t helped either.

Tsunoda: 3 stops – 1 point

While Poolman Leclerc finished in a disappointing sixth place with just one stop, Japan’s Tsunoda was the only one to make three stops in the pits with the Alpha Tauri Honda – and with this strategy he scored the final championship point in tenth place.

Behind Tsunoda are the two Williams-Mercedes of Albon and Sargeant and Hülkenberg in the Haas-Ferrari. With a bit of luck, one of Alfa Sauber’s opponents could have scored. Only then do we discover Bottas, 24 seconds behind the last World Cup point. Teammate Zhou even got a lap.

On to Mexico City

The Hinwilers now hardly have time to analyze the clear defeat. The Mexican GP is already waiting this week. A new chance for eighth place at the World Championship with 16 points. Williams-Mercedes still tops the four backbenchers with 23 points. Haas-Ferrari was stuck at 12 points. While bottom-placed Alpha Tauri now has six points.

Memories of Mateschitz

The Austin GP (50th victory for Red Bull superstar Verstappen ahead of arch-enemy Hamilton in a Mercedes) took place on the first anniversary of the death of Red Bull founder Didi Mateschitz (†78). Let’s not forget that Styria also once supported the Sauber team for almost a decade.
