Malgin ban, Rohrbach acquittal: hunt for referee checker is something to talk about

Denis Malgin (26) was suspended for one match for knocking down Eric Cattaneo after a face-off in Ambri on Saturday. The unlucky linesman spun spectacularly through the air and was lucky not to hit the back of his head.

The verdict against the ZSC star was something to talk about. Malgin himself showed little understanding in an Instagram post, writing: “I never had the thought of hurting a referee. Since you were little, coaches have taught you to win the puck after the faceoff. I’m sorry for this game situation, but to be punished like this is difficult.” And ex-Nati warhorse and MySports expert Timo Helbling (42), who conceded six games in 2017 because he got rid of a referee, asked : “Is that still common sense?”

In a world where referees feel completely respected by players, the league should not have to issue suspensions after such actions. But that is still not the case with the staff in the striped sweaters. It’s felt like fair game for years. It was claimed in referee circles that Malgin would not have worked like that in the NHL or in training during a face-off.

Penalties for violations against referees have been reduced

And because the referees feel that the hockey professionals are not taking them seriously, the league must also intervene when collisions occur that the players negligently accept. The referees must feel protected.

Last season, Malgin would have been banned for three games for the same scene – this was the minimum penalty for fouls against officials. This has now been adjusted so that accidents due to negligence do not have to be punished like intentional attacks.

Now the Nati forward wasn’t the only one to take down a referee last day. On Wednesday, Dario Rohrbach (25) drove over linesman Georges Huguet as if it were air in the derby against SCB. The Tigers forward didn’t even think it was necessary to inquire about his health. He immediately continued playing.

Unlike Malgin, there was no trial, let alone suspension – although the scene was recorded by the officials in the stands. Rohrbach drove head-on into Huguet. No one can accuse him of intent either. However, he failed to exercise due diligence on the ice. A lockdown would have been appropriate.
