2026 Olympic Games in St. Moritz?: Now the Germans are still submitting

The medal statistics clearly show that Germany is the great power on the ice rink, especially in bobsleigh and luge. But when it comes to the question of which circuit outside host country Italy should take over the 2026 Olympic races, the Germans are playing a strange game.

St. Moritz, Igls-Innsbruck (Austria) and La Plagne (French) are in doubt. But no location in Germany, the Germans hold back and also communicate that neither Altenberg nor Winterberg are applying.

But then there is also a lot of politics involved. The German Bobsleigh Association is flexing its muscles and openly demanding in the person of Secretary General Thomas Schwab that Innsbruck and not St. Moritz get the chance.

Spontaneous registration from Oberhof for the toboggan races

The fact that it is never possible to train intensively in the Engadine before the games or otherwise is an uncertainty factor for Germans who are used to winning and this must be avoided.

The latest report from Germany now goes in a completely new direction. Now the Germans want to participate in the games in 2026. At least when tobogganing.

The Oberhof ice rink – the mecca of tobogganing, but not suitable for bobsleigh and skeleton due to the infrastructure – would like to surprise Cortina. But only for tobogganing.

Italian newspapers report on St. Moritz’s advantage

Sebastian Lenk from the Thuringian Sled and Bobsled Association says about MDR: “We are the most modern and sustainable location in the toboggan industry. We offer our know-how and our track to the IOC and throw our hat in the ring.”

However, Oberhof probably does not have a serious chance, as the races in the three ice rink disciplines are rarely divided between different countries. But who knows if the Germans won’t come up with a plan to accommodate Bob and Skeleton too?

But in Italy, according to the newspaper “La Repubblica”, the trend seems to be towards the natural ice channel in St. Moritz. Also for ecological reasons, because the train in Innsbruck runs on ammonia.
