Anyone who is a fan of athletics cannot ignore the name Ingebrigtsen. The Norwegian brothers Jakob (23), Filip (30) and Henrik (32) have been shaping the scene for years.

Father Gjert Ingebrigtsen (57) made them winners as a coach and they have all won gold at major events. But since February 2022, the family-internal collaboration has been history. A mud fight ensued. The reasons? Until now unknown.

“Physical violence and threats”

Now the brothers are unpacking in a statement in the Norwegian newspaper “Verdens Gang”. They hoped for a long time that they would not have to make this public. But it is not possible and “hurts in many ways.” It hurts because it affects a person who has meant a lot to us and our careers.” What follows are harsh accusations.

“We grew up with a father who was very aggressive and controlling and used physical violence and threats as part of his upbringing.” A behavior that haunts the brothers to this day. “We still feel the discomfort and fear that has accompanied us since childhood.”

They would have accepted that and lived with it. “Two years ago, the same aggression and physical punishment occurred again,” they write. “It was the last straw.”

Father responds to accusations

They broke with their father. He was also no longer viable as a coach. That cost them a lot of energy because they were trying to perform at the same time. “The pressure we felt was sometimes inhuman,” they write. “We run out of energy and lose the fun in the sport.”

They now want to find this joy again. They want nothing more to do with their father. “Now we want to move on and hope that our family can find peace.”

Gjert Ingebrigtsen (57) responded to the allegations and contacted ‘Verdens Gang’ through a lawyer. “I have never used violence against my children,” he emphasizes. That would not have been possible, given the extent to which the family is in the public eye.

“I am far from perfect as a father and husband, but I am not violent.” He is deeply unhappy and does not know how the family can overcome this. “But we have to try.” (beer)
