Two months ago, Admir Mehmedi (32) retired as a professional football player. Since then it has been quiet around the former Swiss national player. Until now. A few days before the Bundesliga match between his former clubs Bayer Leverkusen and VfL Wolfsburg, he answers questions in the Kicker interview.
Mehmedi in North Macedonia is being contacted. He currently spends time there with his family. He also completes the trainer training B license. However, Mehmedi explains that he is not looking for an exciting job in the near future. Instead, he is willing to learn new things, absorb things, and gain experience. In the long term, he sees himself more in management. “But I’m far from ready to see myself in a leadership position. I don’t know exactly which path I will take yet,” the ex-FCZ player explains.
Mehmedi, on the other hand, looks back more specifically on his time as a player. Also which coach has helped him progress the most. Mehmedi makes it clear: “I don’t think there is a perfect coach.” However, Christian Streich (58) gave him the most decisive push in his career at Bundesliga club SC Freiburg. «I came to him when things were difficult for me after a year and a half at Dynamo Kiev. He opened my eyes on a human and professional level. “That was a turning point in my career, for which I am very grateful,” said Mehmedi.
On a personal level, Mehmedi has especially impressed Leverkusen player Granit Xhaka (31). “In addition to his quality as an extremely safe passer, his personality is his big asset. I made my debut in the Swiss national team with him at Wembley in 2011. Even as a young player he had this personality,” says Mehmedi. He has always developed further and takes on a leading role. Still, Mehmedi hopes for a 2-1 win for Wolfsburg next weekend. Not even spending time with Xhaka can change that. (Gentlemen)
