Who will be the first to make a transfer?: The goalkeeper carousel starts turning

It is still quiet on the goalkeeper transfer front. So far only contract extensions have been announced. That of the seven-time champion goalkeeper Leonardo Genoni in Zug until 2027. And the emerging Luca Boltshauser in Langnau until 2026. Focusing on safety instead of taking risks is important for the goalkeepers and their agents in the battle for ultimately unattractive places understandable move in the competition.

And yet: shifts will take place. Ultimately, of the 28 goalkeepers who currently form the duos in the National League, no fewer than 14 contracts expire at the end of the season: Reto Berra, Bryan Rüegger (both Fribourg), Simon Hrubec, Robin Zumbühl (both ZSC), Harri Säteri, Joren van Pottelberghe (both Biel), Juha Metsola, Sandro Zurkirchen (both Kloten), Luca Hollenstein (Zug), Gilles Senn (Davos), Robert Mayer (Servette), Mikko Koskinen (Lugano), Benjamin Conz (Ambri) and Tim Wolf (Ajoie).

There are some exciting personalities. Which of them will be the first to get the ball rolling, so that the goalkeeper’s carousel not only turns, but also really gets up to speed? About Nati keeper Berra, who is expected to extend his contract with Fribourg, but who is also suddenly exchanged for Kloten? Or the talented Hollenstein, who actually sees no country behind Genoni in Zug? And he himself says: “I have made no secret of the fact that I look around me.”

In Biel there are now signs that the luxury duo Säteri/Van Pottelberghe is coming to an end. Sports director Martin Steinegger said clearly a month ago: “I can’t imagine going into next season with both of them.” Van Pottelberghe is clear that he wants to make his North American dreams come true. On the other hand, he has recently been linked to Lugano.

There are rumors in the law that Wolf is looking for a new field of work after six years at Ajoie. And then Kloten becomes suspicious again, after all, the 31-year-old helped the Zurich Unterländer to promotion again in 2022. Meanwhile, Ambris Conz is traded to Ajoie. In contrast, current champion goalkeeper Mayer is unlikely to become the subject of speculation, but will instead extend his contract in Geneva. And in Davos, Senn has a good chance to remain part of the HCD.

It will also be exciting to see what happens to the foreign goalkeepers Hrubec, Säteri, Koskinen and Metsola. Contract extensions for Hrubec and Säteri would not surprise anyone, but for the other two the starting position seems more open.

And then there are some other factors and keepers that can become a problem because of that. For example, Ludovic Waeber, who is currently trying out North America, but may be back on the mat in Switzerland in the foreseeable future. And in this case, will he serve out his contract with the ZSC, which runs until 2025 – or will he pursue another option?

In any case, it is not sacred that every goalkeeper actually fulfills his contract after this season. And then Philip Wüthrich would be a possible name, as Adam Reideborn was recently unusually placed ahead of him at SCB. With the SCB’s blessing, Wüthrich could also get on the goalkeeping carousel – once things get going.
