Sandro Tonali admits he placed bets on his former club AC Milan.

The gambling scandal surrounding the three Italian national players Nicolò Fagioli (22), Sandro Tonali (23) and Nicolò Zaniolo (24) is shaking up the 2021 European champion country. While Juve player Fagioli has already been suspended for seven months, Newcastle loanee Tonali has been threatened with an even heavier punishment.

Because unlike Fagioli, Tonali also bet on his own team during his time at AC Milan. According to the “Gazzetta dello Sport”, the Italian confessed this during a secret meeting with the sports law authority. However, Tonali emphasized that he only did this in matches where he was not on the field. The Italian record transfer (Newcastle paid 70 million euros in the summer) is cooperating and hopes for a reduced sentence, just like in the Fagioli case. Nevertheless, Tonali risks a twelve-month ban.

Tonali and Co. suffer from gambling addiction

All players have admitted through their lawyers that they placed bets with illegal providers. In addition, they were diagnosed with a gambling addiction, which could also have a mitigating effect on their sentence. A twelve-month ban would put a serious damper on Tonali’s career. So far, the Italian midfield hopeful’s career has only gone in one direction: steeply upwards.

Tonali’s club Newcastle also reported late on Wednesday afternoon. He wrote in a press release: “Newcastle United can confirm that Sandro Tonali is being investigated by the Italian Public Prosecution Service and the Italian Football Federation for illegal gambling activities.” Furthermore, Tonali “fully” supports the investigation and will cooperate with authorities.
