The New Jersey Devils with the four Swiss Nico Hischier, Timo Meier, Jonas Siegenthaler and Akira Schmid started the season with two defeats from three games. On Tuesday evening they suffered a 3-4 home defeat against Florida. But more than the lost match, Timo Meier’s penalty caused a lot of discussion afterwards.
Just like captain Hischier, the 27-year-old from Appenzeller still has no score points. Instead, a regular guest in the penalty area. Against Florida, he was assessed two consecutive two-minute penalties for tripping in the second period. Then coach Lindy Ruff took off his hat. In the third period, Meier only got a brief appearance, the rest of the time he held the blanket in his 475th NHL game and had to watch the action from the bench.
“He should not face these penalties that he has imposed,” Ruff said of Meier’s sentence. And fans are already eagerly discussing what’s going on with the Swiss, in whom the Devils had so much hope, on the Internet. Over the summer, Meier signed an eight-year contract with New Jersey that will pay him a total of $70 million. But such a long-term contract worth millions is also binding and can certainly become a burden. Is that what the star striker is currently feeling?
