On January 4, 2023, Jan Dalgic turned 25 years old. But the German ice hockey goalkeeper did not feel like celebrating that day. On the contrary. At that point he was rushed to hospital and shortly afterwards received the devastating diagnosis: malignant brain tumor. Now he has lost the battle against the insidious disease.
“We have the sad duty to inform you that our friend and teammate Jan Dalgic passed away in the early hours this morning,” his club, the German cult third division Hannover Indians, announced on Instagram on Saturday.
After the diagnosis, the club launched the initiative “The saving of his life”. This was to support Dalgic financially because the necessary surgery and aftercare were very expensive. “He is a fighter who now has to walk the most difficult road of his young life,” the Hannover Indians wrote on Instagram at the time.
The response was great and the solidarity was great. More than 120,000 euros was raised within a very short time. The financial pressure was taken off Dalgic and his family and he was able to focus on recovery after the successful operation. But the disease returned. And this time he was unbeatable.
“The Indians mourn the loss of a special person and are stunned by the sense of injustice that takes such a young person out of a life that had only just begun,” the club said goodbye to the goalkeeper. “Our deepest condolences go out to his family, who cared for him so selflessly.” And this time too, the response has been enormous. Because his fate affects the ice hockey world again. (beer)
