Triathlete Daniela Ryf (36) missed the podium with a fifth place at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii. Britain’s Lucy Charles-Barclay is crowned world champion for the first time.
Ryf reached the finish line in Kailua-Kona after a 3.86 km swim, 180.2 km bike ride and 42.195 km run in a time of 8:40:34 hours. The five-time world champion is almost 8 minutes short of third place, which is occupied by the German Laura Philipp (36).
Ryf makes up most of her deficit during the last point. If all podium athletes completed the marathon, some of them well under three hours, the Solothurn woman would need 3:02:11.
So Daniela Ryf comes away empty-handed in what is likely her last performance in Hawaii. For the time being, she will at least stay at five world titles and will miss catching up with Natascha Badmann (56). At next year’s World Cup in Nice, where she is keen to compete again, Ryf will probably get the last chance to equal Badmann’s lead.
After four second places, Lucy Charles-Barclay (30) celebrates an impressive victory. The British woman has already taken over the lead in swimming and will not relinquish it. In 8:24:31 hours she improved the course record previously held by Daniela Ryf by almost two minutes. Charles-Barclay has a lead of about three minutes at the finish over second-placed Anne Haug from Germany. Last year’s winner, Chelsea Sodaro, finished sixth behind Ryf.
For the first time since the first edition in 1978, only women will be at the start in Kailua-Kona. In mid-September the men held their race for the world title over the Ironman distance in Nice. Next year the men will return to Hawaii, while the women will go the other way. (SDA)
