On the sidelines of the 141st session of the IOC Executive Committee in Mumbai, India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced his intention to bring the 2036 Summer Olympics to India. «We are enthusiastic about the idea of holding the Summer Olympics. We will do everything we can to organize it,” he said. There is no official candidacy yet.
Due to the enormous market potential, India’s bid should have a good chance of winning the contract. With the resumption of cricket in the Olympic program at the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles, the IOC has taken the first major step towards opening up the Indian sports market.
India can also expect good chances because IOC boss Thomas Bach (69) would support a candidacy. The German sees the country as a sports market of the future. It would “make sense from a sporting and economic point of view,” he says. (SDA/AFP/par)
