Earlier this week, the German national team traveled to the US. The program includes two test matches against the US team (Saturday) and against Mexico (Tuesday).
But who is on the sidelines is almost more important to the DFB selection than the opponent. The two matches are the premiere for the new national coach Julian Nagelsmann (36).
Just a few weeks ago there was sadness at the DFB. Expectations were modest, as the national team’s desolate performances in the previous months had given them enough reasons not to succumb to pride.
But that should be history now. Hansi Flick (58) is no longer there and Julian Nagelsmann has taken on the task of bringing about a turnaround in his own country in time for the European Championship and unleashing new euphoria.
The mood in the team seems to be better than before the change in coaching position. Several players have emphasized in recent days that it was fun to play for the DFB team again. Nagelsmann also said in a media round before the first match that he was “very impressed” by his team. There is an ‘extraordinary spirit’. The coach benefits from the fact that he knows many stars from the national team from his time as Bayern coach.
For the 123-time national player and Bayern striker Thomas Müller (34), the first days of preparation abroad have certainly been a success. “We trained, we had meetings, we had fun together,” Müller summarizes.
Compared to their time together at Bayern, Müller noticed slight changes in Nagelsmann’s training. Sometimes the coach would mention his game idea two or three times more deliberately so as not to keep it too complicated. He continues: “What struck me is the awareness of the short period we have for the tournament and also of his contract duration. Everything is aimed at us quickly understanding what he wants.”
Despite all the new, positive mood, Thomas Müller also puts a brake on the euphoria. «Our games create a spirit of optimism. But first win, and then vote. There is no vote without victories.”
When Germany plays against the USA on Saturday, it will not just be about the good atmosphere. The DFB team still has a score to settle with the American boys. The last meeting – a friendly match in the summer of 2015 – went 2-1 to the US. (Gentlemen)
