IOC examines new award process: will the Winter Games soon be held in a rotation system?

The head of the International Olympic Committee will make a preliminary decision on the status of the selection of host countries as early as November next year, IOC President Thomas Bach said in Mumbai on Friday. The 69-year-old German referred to the “dramatic consequences of climate change” for the future awarding of the Winter Games.

According to this data, the IOC Selection Committee for the Olympic Games has determined in two studies that by 2040 only ten countries will be definitively able to hold the competitions on snow during the Winter Paralympics that will take place after the Winter Games. The IOC is therefore discussing a possible rotation system for the host countries and a different composition of the competition program for the future.

“This is a very complex issue and to address it properly we need a little more time,” Bach continued. The IOC had already decided to postpone the choice of the host for the 2030 Winter Games, which was scheduled for the General Assembly, which also started in Mumbai on Sunday.

2030 Olympic Games in Switzerland?

Last spring, Swiss Olympic, in collaboration with winter sports associations, launched a feasibility study for holding the Olympic Games in Switzerland. The results of this study will be announced in mid-October. Also in a few days, the Swiss Olympic Board of Directors and in mid-November the Sports Parliament will decide whether the vision of the Olympic Games in Switzerland should be pursued at all.

Possible candidates for 2030 could include France and Sweden in addition to Switzerland. Before 2034, many signs point to Salt Lake City as the location. IOC President Bach announced in Mumbai that the selection committee would begin a targeted dialogue with the potential host countries in the coming weeks.
