The issue of dual nationality has become more explosive in recent days as Mihailo Stevanovic traveled to the Serbian U21s. The FC St. Gallen midfielder played for the SFV juniors for years. “We discussed it with him, he made that decision. We respect that,” says Nati director Pierluigi Tami (62). The SFV does not want to put pressure on its talents, even though the association has invested a lot in their training.
Filip Ugrinic (24) is also in demand. Serbian media reported last week after YB’s Champions League match against Red Star in Belgrade that Ugrinic wanted to play for Serbia. “That’s right,” said Nati coach Murat Yakin when he announced his selection on Friday. “We are interested in him and are in contact with him. But we don’t let someone play just to qualify for us. That also requires commitment.”
When Blick asked Pierluigi Tami about the rumors about Ugrinic from Serbia, the Nati director said: “You are misinformed. Murat met him.” Ugrinic wants to play for Switzerland. According to Tami, the YB midfielder would have been in the squad for the European Championship qualifier against Belarus in St. Gallen on Sunday, but had to withdraw due to an injury.
In principle, the director of Nati is not afraid that players will succumb to the advances of other associations and drop out. “Switzerland now has a very good name in Europe and regularly participates in major tournaments – also at U21 level.” And the SFV does not want to use just one player to tie him to the national team. “The players have to really want it,” says Tami.
This also applies to other talents such as Darian Males (Switzerland/Serbia) from YB or Shkelqim Vladi (Switzerland/Kosovo) from Lugano. It is different for Haris Tabakovic (29), who scores and scores for second division Hertha Berlin and flirts with Bosnia-Herzegovina. He’s not a problem for Yakin right now. “If we have young players who perform well abroad, they obviously have priority,” said the Nati coach.
