Sandro Tonali is on his way back to Newcastle.

Italian stars Sandro Tonali (23) and Nicolo Zaniolo (24) have left the Azzurri training camp prematurely, the Italian association announced. The two footballers are under investigation and police questioned them at the training camp. They are accused of possible involvement in illegal betting.

Tonali is on his way back to Newcastle, Zaniola to Istanbul. “For your own protection,” the association explains.

Juventus star Nicolo Fagioli (22) is also being investigated for illegal online betting. If Fagioli is found guilty, he could face a fine and a ban of several years.

Italy will play Malta in the European Championship qualifiers on Saturday. The big goal against England continues on Tuesday. (mom)
