Mode changes are (almost) never well received in the football world, including the new format of the Italian Super Cup.
This year, instead of a duel between the champions and the cup winners, the event will take place in the form of a mini-tournament with four participating clubs. For five days (21 to 25 January 2024). Moreover, the location is a country that makes football romantics blush: Saudi Arabia.
Now two participants, Napoli (reigning champions) and Fiorentina (cup finalists), want to withdraw if the tournament takes place in Sheikh Land. Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis (74) rages: “Only fools want to go to Saudi Arabia to play the Super Cup.” The reason for this would be the current war in Israel. ‘Have you seen what’s happening in Israel? An airspace closure could be imposed for these areas. And all this to make a few million more?”
He immediately comes up with a counter-suggestion: “Let’s do it in the Olimpico! I am not boycotting the format, I am just appealing to common sense.” De Laurentiis therefore wants to hold the tournament in the Italian capital.
