“I love this club more than anything”: Captain Abrashi gives up a lot of money for the rankings

When you think of GC, you can’t get past Amir Abrashi (33). The Thurgau-born midfielder is what has been missing in Zurich in recent years: an identification figure through and through.

Since Abrashi returned to his old club in the summer of 2021, the GC DNA has been circulating in Niederhasli again. And the 33-year-old proves how much the club really means to him in an interview with the “Tages-Anzeiger”. “I love this club more than anything,” he says. In the winter, Abrashi extended his contract until 2024. “GC is my club, so there was no question of an extension.” With the extension, the Swiss-Albanian dual national even accepts a pay cut.

He also wants to pass on this love for the club to his teammates. With a simple means: “I send videos of previous derbies to the group chat. Players need to see the emotions that GC brings. For example, the video of Ricardo Cabanas was also there, when he shouted: This is the ranking, record champions! I was even there, which was great.”

Last season he had André Moreira, Georg Margreitter and Dominik Schmid supporting him as leader. Now everyone mentioned is gone. Another reason why Abrashi wanted to guide FCB veteran Michael Lang (32) to the rankings last summer: “I said to him: ‘Michi, just come to us.’ He just laughed. He also knows this club, but he wanted to stay in Basel.”

Ban on mobile phones before training

Abrashi also emphasizes his leadership personality off the field. For example, he advocates a ban on mobile phones that will come into effect half an hour before training. “I can’t be on my cell phone fifteen minutes before training and feel like I’m focused now.”

The aforementioned Cabanas scene was twelve years ago, and at 33, Abrashi is now about the same age as the original Hopper Cabanas was at the time. But: “I’m fitter than ever, I’m actually doing well.” No sign of fatigue. And what happens after his contract expires in 2024? “I can’t say. But I won’t play until I’m 37, that’s for sure.
