When the FCZ women play against Ajax Amsterdam in the first leg of the Champions League qualifiers on Wednesday, top player Seraina Piubel (23) will also be present in Letzigrund; she will play another season in Zurich. This is surprising because her move abroad seemed like just a formality this summer.
Because last season at the latest, Piubel also attracted international attention. She scored a goal in the Champions League against Arsenal and permanently established herself in the national team. At the World Cup in New Zealand, the FCZ key player played all matches from the start and scored in the win against the Philippines.
Piubel even ended up on the list of Champions League winners Barcelona, and several other clubs from the top competitions also put out feelers. But the Zurich native will stay with FCZ for another year.
After the international match against Italy, she told Blick: “I have had very good conversations with many good people from different clubs. But in the end, not everything was perfect. There is no point in taking a step if you are not 100 percent behind it.”
Then Piubel adds: “It was up to me and not the interested clubs. I probably felt a little too comfortable with FCZ. In the end I just didn’t have the courage to take the step.”
The daughter of ex-FCZ coach Urs Meier will play another season at home and wants to qualify for the CL group stage for the second time against Ajax.
No foreign transfer for Piubel like her previous clubmate Nadine Riesen (23), who now wants to develop further with the big goal of the home European Championship in 2025 at Eintracht Frankfurt. But Piubel is confident that even if she switches just a year before the tournament, she will still make the right development steps until the European Championship climax.
