The Swedish sports scene is in mourning. Agneta Andersson (†62) lost her battle against cancer and died on Sunday. The Swedish news agency ‘TT’ and the Swedish Olympic team reported this on social media.
Andersson was one of the best canoeists in the world and one of Sweden’s most successful Olympians. She won a total of seven Olympic medals, three of which were gold. In 1984 she triumphed in Los Angeles in the kayak single sculls and double sculls. The third victory followed 12 years later, in Atlanta 1996 she also won gold in the kayak double sculls. No Swede has stood on an Olympic podium more often.
«We have been through so much together, even without a canoe. Agneta fought to the end,” her then kayaking partner Susanne Gunnarsson (60) told “TT”. Her thoughts are with Andersson’s husband Martin and their son Benjamin.
Agneta Andersson was not only extremely successful at the Olympic Games. She also managed to win bullion eleven times at world championships with one gold, three silver and seven bronze medals. (bjl)
