Nati captain Granit Xhaka (31) caused a stir after the 2-2 draw against Kosovo with his criticism of Nati training. Coach Murat Yakin (49) was not spared at the time.

In an interview with SRF, the midfielder spoke again about his words. He and Yakin said they had a “good and open conversation” that was good for both parties. “With all the experiences I have had, I can also help the coach,” said Xhaka.

Xhaka wants a base for the national team

In the future, the captain should be even more involved: “It’s not about me, it’s about the whole team,” Xhaka clarifies. What is important for the midfielder is: “It was not criticism of the coach, but of the team, of the association.” Maybe the timing was wrong. However, for Xhaka it is clear: if necessary he would repeat his statements.

And the ambitious captain speaks clear words to the association: “We players actually only demand better places.” Because if the conditions are not optimal, you cannot train optimally. Xhaka hopes that a basis will be created in the coming years where the team can meet each other. Until now, the national team meetings have always taken place at different locations in Switzerland.

Criticism within the team is welcome

He would also like to see more criticism within the team: “We are old enough to accept criticism every now and then. That’s part of it.” The national team should not get “too comfortable” because that is the only way to take a step forward. Xhaka is absolutely aware of the quality of the team.
