At the bottom of the table, but not a state of emergency: is FC Basel in the FCZ trap?

Flashback. 2015. After ten rounds, FC Zürich is at the bottom of the rankings. Not only. Together with Thun and Lugano. They collected seven points. Only won once.

2023. Last weekend. For this round, the tenth, Basel, Lausanne and the rankings are tied for last place. All with five points. The Hoppers and the Vaudois win their matches. Basel loses and falls to the bottom of the table.

Hyppiä was also on a journey of self-discovery

This is what it sounded like in Zurich in 2015 after a 1-0 defeat against Lucerne. It was the third match under the new coach Sämi Hyypiä, who at the time was also a coach on a journey of self-discovery, like Heiko Vogel today: “It was not a nice afternoon at all. We just can’t get to our points. We are stuck in a negative spiral and it is difficult to get out of it. Maybe in the next game we can break away from all places! Push away. To look away. Perseverance slogans. Even a certain amount of sugar coating. As surreal as it sounds. But if after ten disastrous rounds – FCB still has an additional match ahead – you do not take a possible relegation seriously and declare a state of emergency, anything is possible.
