There was a lot of tension on Sunday evening in the Bundesliga match against SC Freiburg (3-0) in the Allianz Arena: the Südkurve from Munich – which is traditionally considered left-wing and socially committed – sent a clear message to the club management.
“Misogynistic violence is not a private matter! Stick to our proclaimed values – or are statutes and awareness just marketing?!” is written in large red letters on banners. The fans hint at the almost signing of Jérôme Boateng (35).
The former DFB star is accused of physically assaulting his ex-girlfriend. The trial will be reopened soon. Yet Bayern was close to a contract last week. New sporting director Christoph Freund called the allegations against Boateng a “private story” that had no major significance for the club. Only after violent protests from the fans did Bayern withdraw from a commitment at the last minute.
The supporters are particularly shocked by the club’s actions, as a new statute has recently been drawn up in collaboration with the club, which is intended to manifest the values of the record champions. It states that Bavaria is committed to the fight against discrimination and racism and to upholding human rights.
The Boateng case undermines the credibility of this vow in the eyes of the fans. And raises doubts about the sincerity of these words. Even though Freund claimed before the match against Freiburg that it was important for him to “uphold the values of FC Bayern”. And when asked about Boateng, he explains: “What was reported there: violence or domestic violence – these are values that we cannot tolerate.”
The Bayern fans send another message during the match in Freiburg. This is probably aimed at recently dismissed Leipzig sports director Max Eberl, who has been strongly linked with a commitment to Munich. “There is no place for character pigs in the club – neither on the field nor on the board!” the statement said. As a reminder, Gladbach fans called Eberl a ‘character pig’ after his controversial move to RB Leipzig.
Coach Thomas Tuchel does not like this swipe at Eberl. After the match he said: “I have little understanding for that. That is a hair-pulling insult.” And President Herbert Hainer also makes it clear: “I can’t comment on that.” (sbe)
