Shortly after the defeat against Servette, Renato Steffen (31) talks about the upcoming Nati trip and the war in Israel. “None of us want to travel to Israel in this situation,” says the Lugano star.
Steffen, who is part of Nati coach Murat Yakin (49), will travel to Zurich for the Nati meeting on Monday, but does not see himself getting on a plane to fly to Tel Aviv on Tuesday, as originally planned. “Israel has been a country at war since Saturday. Our focus cannot be on football if people are suffering or dying,” the man from Aargau added. Steffen hopes that all parties involved will come to a “good solution”.
Steffen continues: “Nothing has been decided yet. What is certain is that in the current situation it is impossible to play a football match there.” The Nati were due to meet Israel in the European Championship qualifiers on Thursday. In addition to a move to a neutral location, for example to Cyprus, a postponement of the match is also under discussion. UEFA must decide on Monday how to proceed.
