EHC Kloten’s defense received a major upgrade this week. On the one hand, super talent David Reinbacher (18) has returned from the Montreal Canadiens camp. In addition, Mika Henauer (23), recently surplus to requirements at SC Bern, could be loaned out. Thanks to these additions, the Zurich Unterländer now have the luxury of being able to do without a foreign defender of their own free will. The Swede Lucas Ekestahl-Jonsson (27) was not in the selection for the 4-2 win in Biel on Friday and also not for the 0-3 defeat against the SCL Tigers on Saturday.

Because striker Tyler Morley (31) is currently injured and Sandro Zurkirchen (33) gained confidence in Biel, Kloten voluntarily started in Zealand with three instead of five foreigners! Zurkirchen was injured in this game and was replaced by Juha Metsola (34). The Zurich team then played the rest of the weekend with four foreigners. But there is no more room for Ekestahl-Jonsson.
“With the addition of Reinbacher and Henauer, there are eight defenders in front of him,” said sports director Larry Mitchell (56) about the relegation. Kloten wanted to get rid of the northerner last spring. “I told him and his agent that it would be difficult for him to be a top-four defenseman for us this season,” Mitchell said.
Last season, Ekestahl-Jonsson had to watch the final sprint in a few key matches because the defensive behavior of the attacking defender (after all, no less than 5 goals and 25 assists last season) was experienced as problematic. But the three-time Swedish international stuck to his two-year contract and wanted to take up the challenge. “That’s his right,” Mitchell says.
But perhaps the Kloteners have motivated Ekestahl-Jonsson to make a change by temporarily excluding him from the selection. “I don’t think he’s happy with the situation,” Mitchell said. Kloten’s sports director is not yet thinking about attracting a new foreigner: “We currently have six import players under contract and are not among the clubs that are all roses.” To open the door to new foreign personnel, Ekestahl-Jonsson would obviously have to do him a favor by getting out of the way.
