Fundamental things have changed at the FCZ this week. Milos Malenovic (38) has employed a new sports director at the club. And since Wednesday there has been freshly laid grass in Letzigrund.
Only one thing does not change at FCZ, whether the field is a field or not: the team remains undefeated. The next three points are against Winterthur in the side subby at 3:2.
Zurich remains the leader and extends the club’s starting record to ten games without defeat. Antonio Marchesano (32), who is increasingly feeling comfortable in the new system, becomes the match winner. The FCW actually deserves a point. But the home side is impressing with its efficiency, as it has done many times this season.
Lots of cheering and joy at FCZ. But for one player from Zurich, all the hustle and bustle that evening is just a side issue: Arad Bar (23). The midfielder is the only Israeli in the Super League. The terrible news about the outbreak of war with many deaths in his home country naturally reached Bar on the day of the match.
The Israeli U21 international is still in the selection against Winterthur. FCZ coach Bo Henriksen (48) told SonntagsBlick after the match: “I spoke to him about the situation in his home country. I told him it was up to him whether he wanted to play or not. Of course he could have flown straight home.”
Bar comes from Tel Aviv, where many Hamas rockets fall. His family lives in the city. He decides to stay with the team, but the summer newcomer spends ninety minutes on the bench. He will not make his Super League debut on this sad day.
After the match, Bar told SonntagsBlick that he did not want to talk about the situation in Israel. Bar would actually have had a flight home on Sunday due to the Nati holidays, but all trips to Israel have been cancelled.
The FCZ player will probably have to stay in Zurich for the time being and try to distract himself from the fear for his family during training.
