New FCZ security chief: Because he is a left-wing politician, there is an uproar even before he takes office

Former FCZ security chief Kaspar Meng never appeared in public during his years of work, which is a good sign. It’s similar to a referee: no one talks about him, he has done his job perfectly.

Completely different for Meng’s successor. There’s already a lot of buzz about it, even though it hasn’t even started working yet. The man’s name is Luca Maggi (33), who, like Meng, is a full-time lawyer and will start his part-time job at FCZ on October 16. Because Maggi is also on the Zurich Greens Council and is a candidate for the National Council, his new FCZ job is causing a stir in politics.

Luca Maggi is considered a police critic

“FCZ President Canepa makes Zurich’s toughest police critic head of security,” writes the “NZZ”. In the article, for example, an FDP municipal councilor says that Maggi is not critical of the police, but is downright anti-police. And an SVP representative says: “I had to swallow twice. It was breathtaking.”

Maggi faces opposition from his political opponents. A TV journalist asked the FCZ boss during the media event surrounding the presentation of new sports director Milos Malenovic whether Canepa had gotten himself into trouble with the appointment of the Green politician.

Canepa’s response: «These nettles don’t hurt me. Fulfilling this position involves matters such as loyalty and integrity. It is not about the political orientation.” The FCZ chairman describes how he encountered Maggi, who is considered close to the Südkurve, was spokesperson for the May Day Committee for many years and fought politically against the Hooligan Concordat.

Canepa brushes away the concerns

“He has the great advantage that he knows the triangle between fans, politics and authorities well. We need someone who has a network in all three areas. Perhaps, based on these terms and conditions, the critics should consider whether he is not the right man for this job.” Maggi himself is not yet talking about the FCZ job.

What does a security chief actually do? He communicates with fans, authorities, clubs and the league and is responsible for fan safety during home and away matches. In fact, he is constantly looking for compromises to reconcile the sometimes quite conflicting needs of fans and security authorities.

It remains to be seen whether Maggi will continue the style of its predecessor. His political opponents are probably just waiting for the first police report on escalating FCZ fans.
