Thanks to two goals from Xherdan Shaqiri (31), the Chicago Fire beat Inter Miami 4-1 and rose to a play-off place in the MLS with two rounds to go.
Shaqiri scored the 1-0 shortly after half-time in front of 62,000 spectators and the 4-1 just under twenty minutes before the end. The cheering at the packed Soldier Field is deafening.
They were the Swiss international’s fourth and fifth goals of the season in the North American Major League Soccer (MLS), the first since mid-July. The two goals that made it 2-1 and 3-1 were also scored by Swiss, former FCZ, Xamax and Lugano player Maren Haile-Selassie (24).
Chicago is in 8th place in the Eastern Conference with 40 points. The top seven qualify directly for the play-offs, the eighth plays against the ninth for the final place. Tenth-place New York City is two points behind Chicago with two rounds to go.
With Miami, which had to do without the injured Lionel Messi (36) for the fourth time in a row, a direct opponent for the play-offs was found. The team from Florida is five points behind – and has one match left to play. (SDA/men)
