FIFA announces premiere: 2030 Football World Cup on three continents

Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay – these six countries have already qualified for the 2030 World Cup (48 participants). The world federation (Fifa) decided on Wednesday that football will take place in these six countries in seven years. For the first time, a World Cup will take place on three different continents.

It starts in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay, each country plays one match. Then Spain, Portugal and Morocco come into play and will host most of the World Cup. Why these three matches in South America? Very simple: FIFA wants to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the World Cup on the continent where it all started in 1930. The opening match took place on July 13, 1930 in the Uruguayan capital Montevideo.

FIFA’s announcement comes as a surprise. The tournament would actually only be awarded in a year’s time on the occasion of the 74th FIFA Congress. This World Cup plan has not yet been fully implemented; a final decision will be made at this conference on May 17, 2024 in Bangkok (Thailand).

World Cup competitions will take place for the first time in North Africa, Portugal and Paraguay. Argentina hosted the 1978 World Cup and Spain hosted it in 1982. “In a divided world, FIFA and football unite,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The 100th anniversary of the Football World Cup should be celebrated in the most appropriate way. Infantino: “The first of these three matches will of course be played in the stadium where it all started, the mythical Estadio Centenario in Montevideo.”

The 2026 World Cup will be played in the United States, Mexico and Canada. FIFA only wants registrations from Asia and Oceania for the 2034 World Cup. Saudi Arabia is showing great interest in the World Cup. (SDA/yap)
