Jürgen Klopp (56) was served last Saturday. His team lost the top match against Tottenham (1:2). Two controversial send-offs and a Luis Diaz goal wrongly disallowed left Klopp in despair.
The Liverpool coach said afterwards that he had never experienced a match with “crazier decisions”. The English Referees Association (PGMOL) immediately apologized for the failure to score Diaz’s goal. Nevertheless, PGMOL’s statement was dismissed as “unacceptable” in a club statement. A full clarification of the wrong decisions and preventive measures for the future were demanded.
The PGMOL complied with this request on Tuesday. A video has been released in which the full communication can be heard between the VAR team and the on-field referee and his assistants.
Video referee Darren England assumed he had made the right call. In the recording you can hear how the check apparently went smoothly. Referee Hooper was already thanking us when the video technician arrived: “Wait, wait. The decision on the field was offside.”
Both the VAR and his assistants initially asked in confusion. “The decision was offside. Are you satisfied with that? In our photo, Diaz is not offside,” the replay operator clarifies again. Now it dawns on the VAR, but it is already too late. The match was already underway and the regulations allowed no further intervention. “There’s nothing more I can do,” said England – accompanied by a few adult-oriented curse words.
As a first consequence, the referees’ association VAR banned England and his assistant Dan Cook from further appearances last weekend. As a further measure, he announced that there would be changes to the VAR protocol. For example, in the future the VAR assistant must also explicitly confirm a decision before it is communicated to the referee on the field. (dti)
