Formerly a player agent, now responsible for a club. The scenario surrounding the new FCZ sports director Milos Malenovic (38) is strongly reminiscent of Basel, where David Degen (40), a former player’s agent, is club chairman.
Since Degen took charge of FCB, the team has become a hotbed for players. In every transfer period there is a constant coming and going. Just like last summer, this will generate millions, but the reconstruction of the red-blue team now appears to be a huge mess.
Will FCZ soon also receive a flood of transfers in Basel because of Malenovic? The new sports director waves off his presentation in the ‘Home of FCZ’ and says: ‘We do not make transfers just because we have made transfers.’
FCZ chairman Ancillo Canepa assures that this summer transfer period can already be seen as an example of Malenovic’s work. Although the agent was in-house as an external club analyst, he already had considerable influence. Canepa: “Milos helped this summer with his great experience. That was one of the reasons he was chosen.”
Malenovic is already involved, but there are very few transfers of the leader – this is also confirmed by the new sports director himself. “It’s about getting a feel for the situation. It was important to stay calm and not get wild in the transfer market. We have succeeded very well. Because there were certainly offers. But the players we wanted to keep were able to be kept.”
It may be that Malenovic is much more likely to keep his cool than the emotional sword. But what about the proximity of your previous workplace to the agency? The FCB boss repeatedly explains that he no longer has anything to do with his twin brother Philipp’s consultancy firm.
This will also happen to Malenovic in the future. If a player at FCZ comes or leaves the orbit of his former company, there will be discussion about whether he could personally benefit from this. “The clean separation is very important to me, also towards the players,” Malenovic answers. “I am known for being professional and transparent. That’s why I stopped all operational matters. I need a clear head for my new job!”
