Player of the month for September: Friborg star Christoph Bertschy stood out above everyone

Ice hockey editorial

Christoph Bertschy (29) already has seven goals to his name. No one has ever scored so many times. And the truth is: the Fribourgian could have scored even more goals. The Nati forward, who returned to his Fribourg home from Lausanne last season with a retirement contract until 2029, is bursting with energy and humor, is difficult to stop and harmonizes perfectly with his line partners Chris DiDomenico and Jacob de la Rose. None of his goals came in favor.

Inti Pestoni (32), the “figlio della valle” (son of the valley), has scored only two goals this season. Both against Lausanne, giving Ambri a 5:4 win after 1:4 and three points. And the winning goal, in which he defeated defender Aurélien Marti, was so beautiful that it should actually count twice, putting all the other beautiful goals in the shadow.

It is the highlight of Reto Berra’s (36) strong month: with an acrobatic roll and his feet in the air, he prevented Davos goalkeeper Stransky from scoring the equalizer in the last minute.

The first Ticino derby, which Lugano won after an early 0-2 deficit (4-3 nP), is a great match with a lot of emotions. But almost twenty fans from both sides, who no longer seem sane, cause a commotion after the match and even throw a junior goal into the stands. A disgrace! The riots were caused by an Ambri supporter who jumped on the ice.

Robert Mayer (33) was excellent in the play-offs and led Servette to its first title. His boom only ended in the quarter-finals of the World Cup when he made a mistake against Germany. And in the new season? The goalkeeper will probably be annoyed by the champion blues of his leaders, who have performed dismal away from home so far. In Fribourg, Geneva suffered a 1:7 defeat and Mayer hit the target with his stick.

Lausanne striker Jiri Sekac (31), who remained goalless in September, also fully expressed his frustration. When he was sent to the shower early for a knee check against Langnaus Saarela, he made kindling from his stick.

Kloten attacker Marc Marchon (28) chooses a different way to deal with frustration. During the derby defeat against the ZSC Lions (1:6) he attacked Sigrist, who was initially anything but willing to fight, and beat him up. In addition, the bully, who will storm for SCB from next season, was handed a precautionary ban for a foul against a referee in the same match.

After two years in the OHL junior league with the Ottawa 67’s, Vinzenz Rohrer (19) is back in Zurich. And coach Crawford, who, like almost everyone from Vorarlberg, simply calls him ‘Vinzi’, also lets the striker play in the power play. Rohrer thanks him with refreshing performances and two goals in September and shows why the Montreal Canadiens drafted him in the third round.

Tigers goalkeeper Luca Boltshauser (30) was unlucky in the defeat in Rapperswil-Jona. He loses a runner halfway through the race and can no longer move at all. However, he does not have to accept a goal.

During the bankruptcy in Bern, Lausanne’s ex-Nati striker Cody Almond (34), who rarely puts accents in the game, claws Fabian Ritzmann (21) and starts a fight. But the Graubünden resident, who is four centimeters taller, rebels against it.

A day before the start of the season, SCB responded to the injuries of Knight and Sceviour and signed Joona Luoto (26), an eighth foreigner. The Finnish striker, who knows coach Tapola from their successful time together at Tappara Tampere, is proving to be a bull’s eye and scores six goals in the first month. SCB will probably extend his trial contract, which expires in mid-November, through an option until the end of the season.

Before the start of the season, ZSC coach Crawford is enthusiastic about goalkeeper Robin Zumbühl (24), who has been promoted to number 2 behind Hrubec because Waeber has moved to North America and Meyer has been out injured for a longer period of time. Zumbühl, who has guarded the GCK Lions’ goal for the past five seasons, only comes into play in the fifth game. He is undeterred by an early goal from a tight angle and wins from the start in his first NL match. Four days later he even became match winner in Lausanne.

The new HCD attacker Aleksi Peltonen (25) has been temporarily suspended after just two matches because he was caught during a doping test. The Finn with a Swiss driver’s license has diabetes and therefore needs insulin. But the HCD did not submit the paperwork for the exemption in a timely manner. It is unclear how long the son of ex-Lugano star Ville Peltonen will remain banned. The then SCB striker Cory Conacher received a three-month suspension for the same offense in 2021 – in the summer without matches. Peltonen has now missed six games.

In the early hours of September 3, Morgan Samuelsson’s heart stopped beating. The Swede, who has been struggling with health problems for a long time, is only 55 years old. His name will always be associated with his extra-time goal in the 2001 Lugano final, when he fired ZSC Lions to the title.
