After six months in Gladbach, Jonas Omlin was appointed as Borussia’s new captain last summer. It was all the more bitter for the club when the number 1 had to undergo shoulder surgery after just two games of the new season.
As if the false start with only one point and seven goals conceded in the games against Augsburg (4:4) and Leverkusen (0:3) was not enough, Gladbach received the bad news at the beginning of September: they had become a top performer, leader and crowd favorite in a very short time. Omlin could no longer walk with the damaged shoulder. The goalkeeper underwent surgery in Switzerland and spent three weeks at home during rehabilitation. “That was good for me,” he said on Monday after his return in a video on the X platform (formerly Twitter).
Omlin can be seen wearing a thick arm brace as he watches his teammates prepare for the home game against Mainz (Friday 8.30pm) after the all-important 3-1 away win in Bochum. After five games without a win, Gladbach climbed to 13th place in the Bundesliga with the first three points of the season and would only be happy if he could achieve another success against bottom team Mainz.
It will certainly help the foals if the captain is back in Gladbach. Omlin: “Now I’m back here and I can watch the boys from the outside.” It will probably take some time before the Nati keeper is back on the field. “I need patience,” said the 29-year-old, who struggled with shoulder problems for a long time before the operation. The hope is that Omlin will be back in the Gladbach goal by the end of the year. (dti)
