There are new dimensions that Swiss coach Urs Fischer (57) will encounter on Tuesday evening in the home game of the Champions League. From 6.45 pm the ball will roll between Union Berlin and Sporting Braga. Union welcomes the Portuguese to their home city of Berlin – but not at home, but in the much larger Olympic Stadium. 73,345 fans instead of the usual 22,000 will support Fischer’s team.
This means that Union can count on more fans in the first group match than Real Madrid, when the Germans only had to bow to the Spanish giants through the Bellingham goal deep into injury time and lost 1-0. 65,000 spectators watched the Bernabéu. The stadium move for the top flight performances in Berlin not only brings with it a gigantic backdrop, but also, according to “Zeit”, additional income “in the mid-million figures” for the three upcoming group matches.
The huge crowd of fans should push the restive Union players forward and turn the team around. “Confidence is not that great at the moment,” Urs Fischer admitted to the media before the match. His team has lost the last five league matches and therefore all matches in September. For the first time since taking office in 2018, Fischer is experiencing headwinds.
But his honor is not lost so quickly: Fischer was voted the best Bundesliga coach in a ‘Kicker’ poll at the end of last season. He himself illustrates what it means not to lose ground under one’s feet, whether in success or failure: “It was five years in the fast lane,” he says, looking back on the home match of the Champions League in which he defeated the Berliners in the took over the final. 2nd Bundesliga and established them as a top team. “Even during this time, I stayed true to myself. During the five years I was not as euphoric as success would like. And I won’t be sad now.”
The opponent is one of the most feasible in the Champions League, but certainly not a build-up opponent. With one exception, Braga has always been represented in European business since 2004; only in the 2014/15 season did Braga not have an international presence.
