At 1.65 meters he is the smallest player in the National League. But Mischa Ramel van Kloten has no complexes. On the contrary. “He has a brutally high level of self-confidence,” says his agent, MySports pundit and former striker Sven Helfenstein. “Mischa is not someone who worries easily. What he lacks in size, he makes up for in confidence,” says the 41-year-old, emphasizing: “In a good way.”

Where does this enormous self-confidence come from? “On the one hand, the confidence that the coaches have in me. A lot of people always said I was too small. That pushed me. I wanted to show everyone that even with this format you can stand up for yourself. I’m glad I never gave up.”

The 20-year-old is convinced: “Size doesn’t matter. You can do anything.” Everything? Even in the NHL? “Yes, there are also many smaller players in the NHL. If you always believe in it, always work hard and do more than the others, that is certainly not excluded.”

The talent from the nuclear power plant village of Niedergösgen says he is not jealous of someone like NHL hope Lian Bichsel (19, 1.96 m), who also comes from Solothurn and played with him in the Olten Juniors.

“There are not many Martschinis in this competition”

The newcomer from Kloten plays fearlessly and remains calm with the puck. “I always take up the challenge. I’m a striker. My job is to create things offensively. And I’m not afraid of physical contact.” There are already situations in which he crawls under the wheels. “But I always get up. I fight for every bit.”

There aren’t many Martschinis in this league.” Ramel, together with Lino Martschini (1.68 m), is the only NL player shorter than 1.70. While the EVZ goalkeeper mainly relies on his shot and explosiveness, Ramel is an agile and smart playmaker.

“All good players want to play with him because they know that if they give him the puck, they will get it back,” said former Kloten coach Jeff Tomlinson, under whom he made his Swiss League debut at the age of 18. Ramel is used by the Finns Miro Aaltonen and Niko Ojamäki or by Tyler Morley and Marc Marchon. He scored three goals in the first two games. With about 17 minutes per game, the 22-kilogram striker gets as much ice time as many foreigners.

Last season he made eight NL appearances and had three scorer points after shining with Winterthur in the Swiss league with 31 points in 36 games.

5 goals against Kloten as door opener

Ramel started playing ice hockey at EHC Olten – he followed the example of his brother Dominik, who was two years older and now plays in the 2nd division at Altstadt Olten. He later moved to Basel. Five years ago he landed in the airport city – after a brilliant performance in Kloten in which he scored five goals. “The next day the offer came from Kloten. This was a little dream come true for me.”

Despite all his self-confidence, Ramel kept his feet on the ground. A year ago he completed an athlete training course at the Werkhof in Effretikon ZH as a specialist in company maintenance. He trimmed hedges, mowed lawns, set curbs or cleared snow. It is the same work that his father has been doing in Niedergösgen for years.

The gem Kloten still likes to go home when he is not spending the night in the Marchon brothers’ shared apartment. He says he doesn’t have time to go out or visit a girlfriend. After all, the small striker still has big plans.
