In December 2022, former Gladbach sports director Max Eberl (50) signed with RB Leipzig. Red Bull director Oliver Mintzlaff (48) described it at the time as an “absolute dream solution”. Eberl was the man for the future. with him as a face The basic gist is that Bayern is being attacked by the club. But this shared future only lasts 320 days. Since Friday, Eberl has been history again in Leipzig.
At first glance, the dismissal comes as a surprise. The team put together by Eberl had an excellent start to the new season and the next confirmation of this will follow on Saturday with the 2-2 draw against Bayern. In addition, Eberl’s top newcomers such as Lois Openda (23) and Xavi Simons (20) have all achieved success. From a purely sporting point of view, there would be no reason to end the collaboration.
The reason is different: in an official statement, the club criticized Eberl’s “involvement in the club”. RB chairman Johann Plenge (38) explains: “100 percent Leipzig, 100 percent RB, that was missing.”
Because: Eberl has never made a secret of his love for his boyhood club Bayern. Since the position of sporting director became vacant there in May after Hasan Salihamidzic left the club, he has been repeatedly linked with a move to Munich. He always avoided denial.
His former lawyer Oliver Mintzlaff is especially disappointed that Eberl never committed to Leipzig. Looking back, he even calls Eberl’s attitude a mistake. He finds clear words on the ‘Sky’ microphone. “I fought for Max for a long time and the conviction was very strong. This common misconception is disappointing. The collaboration could no longer be saved.”
The fact that Eberl continued to watch Munich may also have something to do with the fact that things never really clicked at RB. Internally there were always tensions and disagreements, reports Bild. Including with former DFB star Mario Gomez, who is now technical director at Red Bull Soccer International.
Moreover, those responsible at RB were never enthusiastic about Eberl’s way of working. From their point of view, he is said to have repeatedly started negotiations with players late, leading to internal accusations of laziness. In addition, Eberl was often missed at the local club’s headquarters. Instead, he spent a lot of time in Munich with his partner.
The Eberl drama plays into Bayern’s hands. Because the position above the new sports director Christoph Freund (46, came from Salzburg) is still vacant. It is an open secret that Bayern veteran Uli Hoeness (71) has wanted Max Eberl to join the club for a long time. So it is quite conceivable that something that has been rumored for months will become reality.
Because Eberl’s contract in Leipzig runs until 2026, a transfer fee would be due. Plenge assures us that we have not yet received an offer from Munich. “Max is still under contract with us, and the moment a club – be it FC Bayern or another club – approaches us, we will discuss the modalities.”
However, not everyone is positive about a possible Eberl transfer to Bayern. For example, TV expert Dietmar Hamann (50) has words of warning – and fears an overdose of Red Bull from the German record champion. “Leipzig and Salzburg are the enemies of most football fans. You have Jochen Sauer in the academy, you have Christoph Freund as sporting director, now perhaps the third person with a RB past comes along. I think Bayern have to be very careful.”
In any case, Eberl has not made any friends with his approach in recent months. Over the years, he built a reputation at Gladbach as an integrity and honesty manager who was critical of modern, commercialized football. He repeatedly criticized RB Leipzig’s ‘construction’. The fact that he continued his career there caused great misunderstanding in many places. (sbe)
