Life was in danger: goalkeeper drama in the Netherlands

Fear for the Dutch goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen (28). The goalkeeper of the Dutch first division club RKC Waalwijk was in mortal danger in the match against Ajax Amsterdam. The goalkeeper was injured in an attack shortly before the end. Players and tarpaulins shielded the goalkeeper. He had to be taken away and, according to media reports, even resuscitated.

What happened? Ajax attacked. Striker Brian Brobbey (21) missed the ball while sprinting when it was received. Waalwijk goalkeeper Vaessen fell out of the goal and threw himself into the ball – and the opponent. Brobbey didn’t think about giving up either, he wanted the decisive 4:2. The striker took a powerful shot – and hit Vaessen in the face with full force.

Vaessen immediately collapsed. Without any hesitation, the referee stopped the match. Vaessen’s teammates waved goodbye to the team doctors. Players and supervisors provided first aid.

Scene like at EM 2020

Later tarps are held up as privacy screens. The scenes were reminiscent of the cardiac arrest of the Dane Christian Eriksen (31) at the 2020 European Championship in the match against Finland.

Vaessen is now said to be aware and responsive again. He couldn’t remember anything.

The match in the country’s highest Eredivisie competition was stopped in the 84th minute when the score was 3-2 for Ajax. It has not yet been decided who gets how many points and whether the game will be repeated. (kes)
