FCB chairman David Degen (40) and sports director Heiko Vogel (47) clearly agree on one point: the dismissal of former coach Timo Schultz (46), who coached only eleven games, was not a quick decision. “The development just wasn’t there and the results were extremely poor. There was the perception that things could not continue like this,” said sports director Heiko Vogel at the press conference on Friday. To some extent, the layoff was also due to the new competition mode.
“The new mode means you have to be in the top six – and we’re not there at the moment, that’s clearly not our goal.” FC Basel is currently in ninth place. Only: only eight rounds have been played and the line is drawn after 33 rounds. “The dynamics in the football world are high, things sometimes happen extremely quickly,” says chairman Degen, who shares the opinion of his sports director.
There have also been signs for Degen for some time that the project with Schultz is going in the wrong direction. For example, after the early elimination in the Conference League qualification or the poor start to the season. At the same time, Degen puts things into perspective, because the selection change in the summer was not easy to realize.
Last weekend’s defeat in Yverdon (2:3) caused even more unrest at Degen. “I was there in the stadium, it was really scary and raised a lot of questions for me. We missed everything: attitude, football. Nothing was right. This shouldn’t happen.”
The question arises as to who will whip the team into shape and venture into the FCB shark tank. For the time being, sports director Vogel will take over on the sidelines. The German was already coach a year ago after Alex Frei (44) was fired.
This time, however, he will not take over on an interim basis; the FCB deliberately chose not to use this designation when sending out the press release about the Schultz explosion. For a very simple reason, as Degen makes clear: “Heiko is not an interim coach, but a coach until further notice. We cannot yet say how long that will be.”
Exactly this: “It would be fatal not to rely on him. He has the experience and knows the many new players best because he brought them in in the summer. Even the ones that are still there from last season.”
Vogel is looking forward to working as FCB coach again, the third after 2011/12 and last year. “I can’t look into the crystal ball, but I am convinced that this combination will work.” Vogel will coach FC Basel for the first time next Sunday in the Super League match against newly promoted Stade-Lausanne-Ouchy (4:30 p.m.).
FCB chairman David Degen and sports director Heiko Vogel agree on one thing: the dismissal of coach Timo Schultz, who only played eleven games no quick shot been.
“But the development just wasn’t there and the results were extremely poor,” says Heiko Vogel. David Degen says there have been signs for some time that the ‘Schultz’ project is going in the wrong direction. For example, the away in the Conference League. For David Degen, the defeat in Yverdon last weekend was a fact “really scary. That raised a lot of questions for me.”
It is not yet known who Schultz’s long-term successor will be, and the club does not appear to be giving it much thought. Vogel will take over for the time being. Degen: “Heiko is not an interim coach, but a coach until further notice. It would be fatal not to rely on him. He has the experience and knows the players best because he brought them in.”
Vogel, who ‘is FCB coach until further notice’, is also head of sport. Will he continue in this position? “The team leader is now taking a week’s break…” says the German. Degen also responded to this: “We cannot say exactly who will do which task so soon after dismissal.” Or will Degen even take over the position of sports director? “As for me, I wanted to fulfill my role as president; we have chosen it for a long time.” Shortly afterwards the PK was declared over.
The fact that Heiko Vogel is back as FCB coach is nothing new; the team leader already fulfilled this role last season. boss David Degen on the decision: “It was absolutely not our goal for Heiko to return to the sidelines.”
So why does this still happen? epee: “He selected the team, He has had most of the conversations and knows the players who are still there from last season. In the current phase where trust is needed, it is important to rely on such a person.”
And how long will Vogel, who now takes over from Schultz, be coach? “He is not an interim coach, but a coach until further notice.” In concrete terms: there is no time frame. It is therefore possible that Vogel will continue to hold this position for longer.
Degen: “The performance in Yverdon last week raised a lot of questions – after everything that had happened before (away in the Conference League qualifying, editor’s note). We missed everything there. It was shocking to me what kind of face we showed. “I hold not only Schultz accountable, but also the players.”
Who will be the successor, what kind of man is needed? David Degen: “We determine the next steps in our sports management team. It is incredibly difficult to be an FCB coach. It is a tough and arduous job. It is therefore not easy to make the right decision, both personally and professionally.”
The FCB bosses repeatedly mention the line that divides the Super League into two parts after 33 rounds. Yes, the team from Basel is also among them, but the season is still long. Vogel: “The dismissal was not a knee-jerk reaction, we were in constant discussions and saw no development. There was a realization that things could not continue like this. The solution was missing.”
FCB chairman Degen takes the floor. “A change has been made in the team that we did not want. You can’t imagine the dynamics of the football world, it happens so quickly. In the end we knew: we had to win again as soon as possible.”
Schultz was only in office for eleven games – it seems the German was not a good fit for him. Vogel: “I selected the trainer and had good conversations with him before he was hired. I wouldn’t portray the choice as a mistake. All that happened was that the results were extremely poor and the development was not what we had imagined. But of course it was very difficult with the unrest in the team that we had in the summer.”
The FCB-PK starts promptly at 3 p.m. Sports director Vogel is the first to speak. “It is of course an unpleasant moment why we are sitting here.” Then he takes a deep breath. “We’ve had a lot of conversations, not just since yesterday, but before that as well. In the new mode there is a line, we are under it. » He would feel sorry for Schultz because he tried everything. The results simply didn’t add up.
One thing is clear after Schultz’s dismissal: his successor will not have an easy time, because FCB has not been known for its patience lately. Schultz was the fifth coach in the past two years. Before him, Patrick Frame, Guillermo Abascal, Alex Frei and sports director Heiko Vogel, who is now taking over again, were coaches in Basel.
